We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle
Brief Introduction
Welcome to my professional portfolio focusing on my career in Academia and my work as an Instructional Designer.
My teaching philosophy is to instill in the student the love of learning, the desire to seek out answers to their questions, and to strive to succeed. I see myself not only as an instructor, administrator, and engineer, but also as a mentor. The demands of engineering coursework and course load each semester can be quite overwhelming for students. When I see students struggling, I encourage them to keep working hard and to realize that anything worth having is worth the effort. I provide guidance on best study habits and my approach to learning. I share with them the tools I have used to learn and research. I also let my students know that they are not alone. Everyone at one time or other needs someone to motivate them to succeed if they have the courage to try. My mother has been that someone for me. I try to be that someone for my students. At the end of the day, I want to believe that I helped encourage, inspire, and motivate future generations of engineers. |
My Background
My work experience in higher education has been in various capacities. I started my career in Academia as a Graduate Teaching Assistant while in graduate school. After graduation, I joined the Maritime & Systems Engineering (MASE) Department, Texas A&M University at Galveston campus as a Lecturer. Shortly thereafter I was assigned the position of Assistant Department Head and retained that position until our MASE Department merged with the Ocean Engineering Program in Texas A&M University College station.
Prior to working in the academic realm, I worked in industry as an engineer for both corporate and governmental entities. My work as an engineer focused primarily on public infrastructure projects (i.e. roadway/pavement design, urban regional flooding improvement projects and municipal utility district work). While working as an engineer, I obtained my professional engineer's license. To expand my horizons, I decided that I wanted to share my knowledge and love of engineering in the classroom, which led me to my career in Academia. My goal became and still is to increase the number of engineering students and to motivate them to successfully graduate and join the professional engineering arena. |
